Medical Camp at Kanchipuram

A medical camp is being held at Kanchipuram on the Saturday the 4th. Request all of you to particpate. The camp is followed by a factory Visit (Silk Saree Unit). This Project in coordination with Concern Chennai Foundation & M N Eye Hospital, Chennai.

Eye Camp – Kanchipuram

RCCT did an eye camp on Saturday (4/12) in association with Concern Chennai Foundation and MN Eye Hospital at Kanchipuram. The camp was organised by Sri kanchi Arya Vysya Samajam at their own Kalyana Mandapam.

Three of us (Rajie, Sreekumar and self) represented RCCT. Sreekumar drove us down on a lovely morning with brief drizzles around and cool breeze. We had sumptuous breakfast at Motel Highway, Poonamalle and reached Kanchi at 10 am. The function was inaugrated by Rtn Chandrasekhar, District Chairman, Arya Vysya Samaj and founders of Kannika Parameswari Group of educational institutions.

An eight member team from M N Eye Hospital came in at 9.30 am and went about in a professional manner registering the visitors and moving them from desk to desk for different tests. A total of 111 patients were screened and 15 were prescribed to change glasses. 5 of the patients were shortlisted for free surgery and brought back in the evening by the MN team to Chennai. 4 of them were successfully operated and dropped back on Sunday evening back in Kanchipuram while the 5th patient had many complications and was asked to come back after more tests and with family members consent as treatement would be expensive.

We moved out in the middle to visit Bommakara Street (about 2 kms away) where 2 streets are full of artisans who make dolls as a profession from their homes. All the dolls we buy during Navarathri near our homes are made by these kind of artisans right through the year. The artist explained to us the whole process very patiently without expecting us to buy or pay anything. He buys clay and kneads that with his legs. He plans which toys to make based on previous demand and orders for moulds accordingly. Each mould can be used to make about 300 toys. The moulded clay is then kept in kiln and dried and subsequently painted and finished. The craftsman has no monetary inflow right throught he year and borrows money for 10 months and his flow starts only 2 months before Navarathri. There are agents who buy in bulk locally from these artists and sell at different centers. We bought a Rama set for Rs.200 (4 pieces) which normally costs 500 to 600 locally. That is the spead which the middlemen get. It was a very interesting experience and opened our eyes to work done at villages. The same person also had a zari spinning unit at his house where he was spinning a silk sari.

We came back to the camp venue at 1.30 pm to have a great lunch arranged by the hosts and drove back to the city. It was a lovely trip which would have been better with more participation.

BBC – Beer Biryani Cricket

The beautiful but threatening weather on Saturday cocooned into a balmy sunny Sunday thanks to the prayers of Rotarians from 4 city clubs…. Chennai Towers, North, Galaxy and Meenambakkam. Perfect setting for a game of cricket at KRMM grounds. As usual RCCTians were on time and in full strength… planned their strategy and practiced enough before the other Clubs ambled in at 10 am. Thanks to the last minute preparations were the winners in game 1…thanks to the efforts of PP.Rtn. Sriram Raju. We won against Meenambakkam comfortably. Thought the man of the match went to Meenambakkam we played well as a team. Great camaraderie on and off the ground followed.

The next match was between Galaxy and North which witnessed great batting and fireworks on the ground !! 48 runs in 6 overs was the score by North…. The people in the gallery almost wrote of Galaxy….surprise surprise Galaxy won comfortably helped by North’s mediocre bowling and fielding at the time after much drama. Apparently Galaxy is made up of many cricketers of yester years. We had only President Rajie and Spouse Vijayasarathy as ex-cricketers in our team and hence we decided to use the Australian pressure tactics and let Eashwar loose on them …..Much of the psychic pressure was coming from behind the stumps thanks to Eashwar and his encouraging words ;-) we know how good they can work on new comers !!

So the finals were cast in stone…RCCT vs RCCG…. Great beginning by Raaj and Vijay….excellent 50 partnership….well almost !! splendid innings by Sriram who literally got carried away running when there were no runs to run for….we amassed 84 in 10 overs…..decent score to defend given that Galaxy were just coming into the second match immediately after their game. It went to the wire…last over 18 runs to win…last ball 3 runs to win and the better team of the day won…..RCCG walked away with the trophy.

It was 1 O clock…we were all fried by the sun by now and needed to get our palms around that cool cool beer and the delicious biriyani. All teams assembled at the Gandhi Nagar Club….great air conditioning and fantastic fellowship. Overall and super Sunday – could have only been better had we won!

But here is to Eashwar, Raaj, Gita, Prithvi, Sabu, Arjun Vijay and everyone else who were a part of this BBC for having given us a great time and kept track and tab of the proceedings so much so that the other Clubs are planning to emulate us with BBC Season 2….and I was like … yeah right !! Emulate RCCT …. Dream on buddy.
